Full-automatic Immaterial Labouring Series - Live
(FAILS - Live)

What it is
One of a series of machines that automatically generate false user behaviours to feed the livestream platforms. Platforms that cultivate users’ attention and render users’ behaviours into data assets.

What it does
FAILS-Live interacts with random live-streamers in real time.

It automatically watches a random streamer for a random duration and generates a random amount of likes for them. After a random period of time, it decides whether or not to leave more likes for this streamer, then it moves on to the next random streamer.

It is plugged into a larger display to enlarge the format of live streaming - the content usually viewed on a portable device is then transformed. Body gestures and executions of entertainment are detached from the normal condition of engagement with social media. The FAILS and the live streaming become a scene to be observed. The purpose of the digital labouring (i.e. entertainment) is detached from the execution of it - it becomes a performance of the mere symbol of labouring.

It leaves space to the audience to see what we do when we entertain ourselves.

Context
In the context of Surveillance/Data/Platform Capitalism, users’ behaviours, initially used for improving services, are now being used to form the Behavioural Futures Market.

It is a concept where the users are:

1. the resource;

2. the labour of organising the resources (through entertainment);

3. the primarily targeted consumers themselves.

In this context, addictive entertainment could be reinterpreted as the means of attention and data harvesting.
